Dried herbs

We witches know - our spaces hold energy. Every conversation, ritual, and thought leaves its mark.

That is why it is important to know how to cleanse your space and energy. But here’s the truth: you don’t need to burn white sage or palo santo to clear stagnant vibes. In fact refraining from using them can be a conscious choice that supports sustainable development and shows respect for other cultures.

Let’s talk about why, and then I’ll share my favorite cleansing practices you can start using today.

Why skip the white sage?

White sage and palo santo hold deep spiritual significance for many indigenous communities. In recent years, overharvesting to meet the demands of New Age movements and fashion has caused environmental damage and violated cultural traditions.

If the plant doesn't grow where you live or isn't part of your heritage, using alternatives can be both a sign of respect and a way to create magic that flows with the rhythm of your place. This is my perspective, and always choose what resonates with your heart.

How to cleanse your space & energy - cleansing ideas

1. Cleansing with local herbs

Instead of white sage, work with plants that grow naturally around you. You can dry them yourself or buy them at the local store. You can use for example:

  • Lavender for peace

  • Rosemary or mint for protection

  • Bay leaves for banishing negativity

  • Mugwort for dreamwork and psychic clarity

You can use herbs not only for smoke cleaning.

Other ideas:

  • Put dried lemon slices to remove the negative energy

  • Place a bowl with mixed dried herbs and salt

  • Hang dried herbs

I have mint and sage on my balcony. I hang fresh mint to dry, then make a tea or hair infusion from it. Having even a small balcony garden with herbs and flowers is very relaxing for me.

2. Sound cleansing

 Vibration moves stagnant energy beautifully.

  • Use a singing bowl, chime, bells or even your own voice in chanting

  • Walk through your home, letting the sound sweep away heaviness

I use small bells and also have a pentagram with bells hanging by my front door.

Bonus: This method leaves no smoke, which is important for those with allergies or pets sensitive to scents.

3. Salt energy

Salt absorbs negativity like a sponge. Remember to replace it from time to time, but be careful how you dispose of it so it doesn't harm plants or animals.

  • During rituals, create a circle of salt around a candle

  • Place a small bowl of salt at your home for protection

  • Try black salt for extra protective energy - you can even make your own from ashes and herbs

4. Moonwater & sunwater

Create a cleansing spray using water charged under the moon or the sun and a few drops of essential oil (like lemon or eucalyptus)

  • Mist doorways, corners, and around your aura

5. Visualization & breathwork

Never underestimate the magick of your mind. Visualizations can be really powerful.

  • Close your eyes, breathe deeply, and imagine golden light pouring into the space

  • On the exhale, visualize grey, stagnant energy dissolving and being carried away

6. Crystal power

Crystals like black tourmaline, selenite, and clear quartz are excellent for clearing and protecting your energy.

  • Place them in your house as energetic guardians

  • Selenite wands are amazing for “combing” your aura after a stressful day. I use selenite also to clean my cards and other crystals

7. Cleansing bath or shower

Your own body can be just as much in need of cleansing as your home. Water magic is one of the most gentle yet powerful ways to reset your energy.

  • Cleansing bath - add a handful of bath sea salt, a few drops of essential oil (just be aware of any allergies), and fresh herbs like rosemary or mint to your bathwater. Imagine all stagnant energy dissolving away

  • Cleansing shower - stand under running water and visualize the stream carrying away any heaviness or negativity. You can enhance the effect by using a homemade scrub.

Witchy desk

Cleansing isn’t just about removing “bad” energy. It’s about refreshing and rebalancing. Just as you might air out your apartment or vacuum to feel good, it's also important to restore the energy- both at home and within yourself. Do it with intention, respect for the earth, and self-love. What's your favorite energy cleansing method?
