Witch ball

If you love a touch of old-world magic mixed with personal intention, a witch ball is the perfect charm to craft. These beautiful orbs are more than just decorations, they’re ancient tools of protection, designed to ward off negativity, evil spirits, and unwanted energy from your home.

Today, I’ll guide you through creating your own witch ball. I’ll share how I made mine and give you some magical ideas for what to add to yours.

What is a witch ball?

Witch balls have been around for centuries, especially in English and Eastern European folk traditions. Traditionally, they were glass spheres hung near windows to trap malevolent spirits or deflect harmful energy. Some were filled with herbs, pins, threads, or even strands of hair - all chosen for their protective symbolism.

Today, witch balls are still used by modern witches and spiritual practitioners, though their look can be as simple or ornate as you like. What matters most is your intention, the spell you weave as you create it.

My witch ball

I recently created my own witch ball using a base from Witch Casket (their Instagram: @witchcasketuk), which came with a few powerful ingredients: a safety pin for protection and binding, and marshmallow root for peace, comfort, and emotional shielding and of course with the witch ball.

To make the witch ball even stronger, I added:

Cat’s Claw Bark - a fierce protector from the jungle! This herb is known for its strength, resilience, and banishing properties. It helps you stand tall in the face of negativity and keeps lower vibrations at bay.

✨A blend of Black Haw Bark, Nettle, and Rosemary -great trio for grounding and energetic defense.

  • Black Haw Bark protects from psychic attacks and emotional drain

  • Nettle forms a strong energetic barrier, repelling envy or ill intentions

  • Rosemary cleanses, purifies, and calls in divine protection

I lit a white candle while preparing my witch ball - symbolizing purity and light and said my intention for safety, peace, and harmony in my home.

Once sealed, I hung it near my doorway, where it now stands guard, watching over my space.

How to make your own witch ball

You can make your own version with whatever materials you have on hand - it’s your energy that gives it power!

If you don’t have a ready-made witch ball, you can easily repurpose a clear Christmas ornament or any transparent bauble with an opening.

Here’s a simple guide:

  1. Cleanse your materials - with incense smoke, salt, or selenite

  2. Add your chosen ingredients

  3. Seal the ball with the intention to protect your home

  4. Hang it by your door, in a window, or near your altar for continuous protection.

Protective ingredients you can use

Here are some classic herbs and items you can include:

  • Bay leaves – for protection and strength

  • Cloves – to repel negativity

  • Black salt – for powerful banishing

  • Juniper berries – for warding off evil spirits

  • Lavender – for peace and gentle protection

  • Pins or nails – to trap harmful energy

  • Small crystals – like obsidian, tourmaline, or clear quartz

You can also add personal tokens , for example a protective sigil, or a tiny scroll with your intention written on it.

Protection magic doesn’t have to be elaborate. It can be as simple as a sphere filled with herbs, love, and intention, guarding your home. I really love witch balls and I have two of them at my flat.

Next time you feel the need to protect your space, gather the ingredients, light a candle, and create your own witch ball. Or maybe you already have one at home? ✨
